 Membership in Tau Beta Sigma
Membership in ΤΒΣ's Eta Gamma chapter is open to any student who, for each semester, is involved in at least one of the Boston University Music Organizations (BUMO).
How Do I Become a Member?
As with many Greek letter organizations, the road to membership in ΤΒΣ is not instantaneous. At the beginning of each semester, Eta Gamma holds a series of "get to know us" events (traditionally known as "Rush" for sororities and fraternities). Each semester's events are different, but most are
casual events, on or off campus, where all members of the band are encouraged to meet the active sisters of Eta Gamma, band alumni, and other members of the band. It's an opportunity to have a good time, meet new friends (in or out of the chapter), and learn what Tau Beta Sigma is all about. It also gives students who might not be familiar with Boston a chance to go see some of the less expensive things to do within the city.
The final rush event is the Informational Tea. The Tea is held in more of a full-group setting, where all sisters and alumni will introduce themselves (in case you missed them at a prior event). Potential members will be able to see the diversity of the sisterhood and hear the individual perspectives of why sisterhood is important to them, why the sisters joined, etc. Questions about membership or about the chapter are welcome (and encouraged!).
Shortly after the Tea, invites are given to band members who have expressed an interest in joining Eta Gamma. Potentials who accept the invitations to become members of ΤΒΣ become membership candidates (MC's). MC's spend the next 6-8 weeks in the Membership Education Program, where they gradually learn more detail about the sisterhood
on a national, district, precinct, and chapter level. At the end of the Membership Education Program, MC's go through final intiation to become full members of the chapter.
If you have further questions about the membership process or if you are interested in becoming a member, please contact our Vice President of Membership, Alex.
Hazing Policies
Eta Gamma follows strict non-hazing policies, as defined by our National Headquarters and by Boston University.
ΤΒΣ Membership Definitions
There are seven recognized types of membership in Tau Beta Sigma, per our national constitution, as defined below:
ACTIVE: All active members of the Sorority shall be college or university students who are enrolled/actively participating in the band and have paid their current membership dues for the year. In the event a member of the Sorority is unable to enroll/actively participate in band, the person may continue as an active member for the academic term provided chapter members and sponsor so desire. An exception must be approved by the National President. Active members are eligible to hold office, serve on committees and take part in all business and social affairs of the chapter. Voting privileges will only be given to active and associate members. A member of Kappa Kappa Psi who has ever held active status in Kappa Kappa Psi is not eligible for active membership in Tau Beta Sigma.
CONDITIONAL: Conditional status in the Sorority may be maintained for one year by a formerly active member in good standing. Conditional status may be requested by an Active member, in writing, from the chapter when conflicts arise because of work or class schedules and thus prevent the student fulfilling the requirements for active membership. The request shall be approved by the Sponsor and Director of Bands. The definition and terms for Conditional Status shall not be altered on the local chapter level, nor shall Conditional Status be imposed upon Actives to meet obligations. Conditional members may attend all meetings and functions, however they are ineligible to hold office or vote. Members who meet these criteria shall be granted conditional status contingent upon payment of the current year’s Member Dues. If after one year, the member has not reclaimed active status or become an Alumni or Life member, the member will be classified as inactive with the chapter.
INACTIVE: Former active members who are enrolled in school but do not pay Member Dues will be classified as inactive members. Inactive members are not considered in good standing and therefore, have no active membership privileges.
ASSOCIATE: Associate Membership is granted to members of Kappa Kappa Psi who transfer to a college or university which does not have an active Kappa Kappa Psi chapter and meet the requirements as defined in the present transfer policy. Before becoming eligible for Associate Membership, the potential Associate member must be educated in the Ritual and traditions of Tau Beta Sigma. Associate members may vote and hold office. Any exceptions must be approved by the National Council.
HONORARY: In recognition of outstanding ability, accomplishment, or devotion to the best interest of the Sorority, a person can be given Honorary membership by a chapter. This shall be the highest honor which can be conferred by a chapter. Undergraduates are ineligible for this recognition.
ALUMNI: Alumni status shall be granted to those members of the sorority who are Active, Associate, or Conditional their last term prior to completing their education or terminating their affiliation with their college or university. Alumni members of the sorority shall have the same privileges as active members except for voting and introducing business. An alumni member shall be able to serve as a nonvoting member of any active chapter committee. If an alumni member wishes to reactivate, the alumnus must be a student, be enrolled in the university’s band, and meet the requirements as an active member of the local chapter.
LIFE: Lifetime members are alumni who have decided to pursue a more committed relationship with Tau Beta Sigma after graduation.
